The only reason why I'm giving this book four stars is because it had a very slow start. I didn't really get into it until page 123. Once it picked up though...WOW. I was reading constantly. I wanted to know what would happen next with Emma and Jacob and the other kids. I wanted to know what would happen with the Wights. It was a page-turner.
I loved the characters. Jacob is a not so typical sixteen-year-old kid. He comes from a very wealthy family, has everything handed to him on a silver platter, and has a grandpa who's deemed crazy by all the relatives. He sets off on a journey to Cairnholm, a small island of the coast of Wales. He wants to discover more about this orphanage his grandfather lived at for a good part of his life. There, he meets Emma and other peculiar children who have these strange abilities. I think the one person I loved the most though was Enoch. He's just a strange kid. That's all I have to say.
The old pictures were woven brilliantly into the story. Someone would pull out a picture and say, "Here, take a look at this!" and then there it is for you to look at. Or, there will be a description of the sky or a drawing or a person and on the next page there will be a photo of them. I flipped through the book several times after I finished reading it just to look at the pictures and to go back to see what they mean. I mean, the cover! The cover is amazing!! It's what drew me to this book immediately when I saw it on the shelves. Plus, the author's name is pretty darn cool as well.
Just pick up the book and read it. Push through the first 120 pages and you'll love it!
