Not Without My Daughter by Betty Mahmoody

5 Stars

I picked this book up on a whim, the day before I left my parent's house. Just after one chapter, I was instantly hooked. I had to ask my mom if I could take it with me back to Colorado and promised I'd have it back to her at Christmas. My mom and my sisters have all read this book, and I've heard nothing but great reviews.

This story is truly inspiring. Betty Mahmoody is a strong and determined woman who I've grown to truly admire. If I were in her situation, I don't know if I would be able to stay true to myself and to my religion and to my culture when everything and everyone around me was telling me that what I believed in was wrong and that I would face death if I didn't do what I was told.

This was truly an inspiring story about a mother and daughter's journey through two years in war-time Iran and eventually their escape from Betty's mad husband.

It's a strong and poignant story that I will remember years into the future. I love how Betty never swayed from her set goal of getting back to America with her daughter Mahtob throughout those two years. She had to act as the submissive wife, learn all of the Islamic prayers and my a dutiful Muslim wife all to convince her husband that she was trustworthy enough to go throughout Tehran on her own.

She went through so many different contacts who said they could get her out, and it took her row years to finally meet the right person. I have crazy respect for this woman and I highly suggest that if you're even remotely interested on learning about different cultures or reading a book with a strong lead, I'd recommend this one in a heartbeat.
