2 Stars
Book Rating: PG-13
Violence: PG (Sure, there's blood, but it's like Percy Jackson)
Language: PG-13 (Sh*t, f*ck, sparsely used, D*mn, douche, d*ck)
Sex: PG-13 (The author clearly states her books are for 16 and up because of sex so...)
Substance use/Abuse: PG (Underage drinking, some smoking)
To start, the only reason I'm giving this book two stars instead of one is because of the premise. It was something I hadn't read before: i.e. The Grim Reaper and his children. So that was cool.
BUT. The rest of the story was unimaginative and mundane. I felt like both of the main characters were just taken from character tropes. The sassy, main character, who's really pretty but doesn't know it, is the only responsible one in her family because she has an incompetent parent, and is a little edgy. "I'm not like other girls," they all say as they don their black clothing and combat boots. (Which is why I'm confused by the cover. Not once does this girl wear a dress). The thing about Piper is that she's supposed to come off as this rebellious teen with a snarky attitude, but I just found her to be whiny and bratty. There was not one redeeming quality for this girl which was a major disappointment. Her mother was just murdered in front of her and we don't see one ounce of grief from the girl. All she wants to do is get in the pants of the bad-boy she met on the beach.
Next, we have the typical love interest of teen romance. Broody, arrogant, with god-like good looks, and washboard abs. They play the role of being the absolute jerk who's not very nice but the heroine is attracted to him anyway. And they make-out. So...cool.
I debated putting this book down halfway through just because the language the main character used sounded so unnatural. It felt like the author was desperately trying to sound like an angsty teenager, but didn't know how to do it. Using phrases like "toot my own horn" did not make me think of your typical eighteen-year-old girl. The use of acronyms throughout really started to get on my nerves, like, OMG, WTF, WTH, etc. There's no teenager alive who uses acronyms in their everyday speech. On top of the acronyms, there were many words that were misspelled and several incomplete sentences. I felt like I was editing a first draft of a novel as I highlighted phrase after phrase on my Kindle. (Could this just be the e-book version)?
Not to mention that the way Piper talked about Zane throughout the book and the way she was thinking about how "yummy" he was. HE'S NOT A PIECE OF MEAT, OKAY?
Despite being the worst book I've read this year, I did find myself laughing out loud at some parts such as...
"With one hand behind my head and another out in front of me, I attempted what was supposed to be the Sprinkler. A dance move that I only performed behind closed doors."
"I hadn't expected a motorcycle ride could be so...erotic."
"He folded his muscles..." (HOW)?
"His hair was black as a wintry night, eyes icy blue as a gypsy's heart." (WHAT DOES THIS EVEN MEAN)?
Apparently, I'm in the minority here of not liking this book. It has an average rating of over four stars, but I just felt like it was immature and childish. Not to mention the grammar and spelling mistakes that really sent my English major heart into a tizzy.
The concept was interesting, it was unlike anything I've read, but it could have been executed better. We could have been given characters with actual depth and not the kind of depth where all they wanted to do was tear each other's clothes off. The dialogue could have sounded more natural, the world building could have been done better. (I'd still like to know why the Grim Reaper happens to be on that island and how that came to be, but maybe that's in the next book, though I won't spend my time reading it).
Overall, if you want a book with a good paranormal romance, this is alright. If you don't really care about the mistakes, go ahead and pick it up, though I can't fully recommend it and keep my dignity.
